DIY – Baby skin soothing balm

When it comes to baby care and baby care products, I make sure I give the best for my little one. Based on the analysis I did from various resources about commercially available baby essentials, I have come to a conclusion that anything that is made by mommy at home is the best!

Baby skin soothing balm is something that is absolutely necessary for my baby during all seasons. It keeps my baby’s skin soft and aids to recover her skin from diaper elastic marks. I also use it to massage her at night so that her skin stays moisturized the whole night.

To make a baby care product that meets your expectations and works perfectly, you need ingredients of finest quality and they in no way should be the cause of any allergies or skin irritations. Another main reason why I am into this is because, this process is more Eco-friendly.

Cocoa Butter is the main ingredient of my skin soothing balm as it has so many benefits for skin and body. It helps in curing many skin problems and works wonder on damaged, dry skin and lips. Also regular use of cocoa butter slows down ageing process.

I researched carefully with so much effort to find the ideal product. I bought raw,organic,food-grade cocoa butter from Wild foods in amazon. My daughter and I just love the smell of it 🙂 It is of great quality and I love the fact that they are super responsible about the purity of the ingredients and the customer service is great too. They regularly did follow-ups through email and ensured I received the product on time and in the perfect condition.

Ingredients :

  1. Cocoa Butter – 1/2 cup (or) 20 wafers – You can get them here.
  2. Shea Butter – 1/2 cup ( 100% organic,raw,food-grade)
  3. Coconut oil – 1 Table spoon (organic)
  4. Lavender or Chamomile Essential oil – 10 drops (Therapeutic grade )

Recipe :

  1. In a clean, sterile pan, melt cocoa butter and Shea butter in low flame.
  2. Add coconut oil.
  3. Once they are all completely melted, remove from heat.
  4. Add the essential oil and allow to cool.
  5. Pour the content in to a sterile glass-jar or mason-jar.
  6. Wait for it to solidify. You can also place it in refrigerator for few minutes to come into the right texture.
  7. Store in a cool, dark place and use regularly.

Shea butter is also a great agent for skin softening and skin soothing. It has high concentrations of vitamins and fatty acids and has wonderful healing properties.

We all know how coconut oil is beneficial in so many ways. Apart from keeping our skin moisturized, it has anti-microbial properties that protect us from harmful bacteria. In India, we have this habit of applying turmeric mixed in coconut oil on lesions and cuts. It works like magic.

Lavender oil has calming effect and it helps to ease up a fussy baby. Chamomile is also great for babies who have troubled sleeping patterns and it has natural soothing properties. So I decided to go with one of these oils. Personally, I love the smell of lavender and I used the same here.

Since we did not use any strong preservative in the making, the shelf life is not more than 3 months and that is why I made a small quantity. We have been using this in our home for about 3 weeks and it works incredibly well that even I use it as a night cream. It is so nourishing and keeps my skin hydrated through the night.

Hope you find this post useful and if you have your own recipes for baby products, please leave in comment!
